A Norwegian Organization, Norsk Lastbærer AS Pool that manages nationwide pallet leasing for retailers and manufacturers now is piloting RFID tags for tracking plastic pallets and totes. The RFID pilot covers two food factories as well as two distribution centers for the Coop retail chain. The RFID pilot uses UPM ShortDipole ultra-high frequency EPC Gen2 RFID tags, fixed RFID readers provided by Impinj. and antennae by Intermec.

A UPM ShortDipole tage is embedded in the plastic pallets that are loaded with goods destined for either of the two RFID enabled Coop distribution centers. Handheld readers read and encode the tags and then transmit the shipping details to the company. The data is then stored and made available for web access.

A huge boost is expected in the SCM hiring in the coming year, indicates a survey by APICS along with Cameron School of Business. 64 percent respondents with hiring responsibility said that they are expecting to hire new employees in SCM within the next 12 months.
This high rate of hiring along with an expected 50 percent reduction in layoffs projects the highest rate of net job growth in SCM professionals since the advent of the recent global recession.
"2010 saw incremental growth in the expected hiring among operations and SCM professions," said APICS CEO, Abe Eshkenazi. "This huge increase in SCM hiring and the decrease in layoffs in Q4 of 2010 are clear in the US Labor Department jobs report, and this is a huge cause of optimism for SCM professionals."

RFID in Credit Cards

Filed in archive News on March 11, 2011

RFID in Credit Cards
© Robert Scoble
RFID is being used in some credit cards now for contactless payments. The tiny chip inside the card allows for information to be read from a card reader, which makes for fast and more convenient shopping since the card doesn't actually have to be swiped. MasterCard PayPass, Visa payWave, and American Express expresspay are a few of the most popular.

A financial crimes detective points out that it is already difficult for them to trace back to points where credit cards are being compromised, and the RFID technology will make it that much more complicated for them. They haven't seen many issues with it yet, but when a security expert took to the streets with an off-the-shelf card reader he bought online and a computer, he was able to obtain information from RFID cards through people's pockets, including bank names, account numbers and expiration dates.
