Walmart Canada extends its supply chain contract

Walmart Canada has signed a five-year extension, until 2013, to its contract withSupply Chain Management (SCM), an Exel company. In Canada, SCM provides dedicated transportation, logistics and value-added services to Walmart's 312 stores and Super Centers across the country.
According to Material Handling Management, SCM operated five distribution centers totaling five million square feet to support Walmart'sambient supply chain. Products handled within the facilities include general merchandise, dry grocery items and imports.
SCM also coordinates all outbound transportation activities and directs a regionally dedicated fleet of150 tractors and 350 drivers delivering products from distribution centers to Walmart stores. SCM was acquired by Exel in 2004 and operates multiple distribution centers in Mississauga and Cornwall, Ontario, and Calgary,Alberta.
Dan Gabbard, president ofSCM, explains, "We strive to identify efficiencies that contribute to Walmart'sbottom line, so it can continue to serve millions of Canadians and grow itsbusiness."
