Global consumer packaging company Rexam, the world's leading beverage can maker, has been named overall winner of this year's European Supply Chain Excellence Awards.

It also picked up the main award in the separate Engineering and General Manufacturing category for the second year in a row.

Rexam's winning European and Asian beverage can operation beat off stiff competition from other blue chip companies, including O2, to win the overall award.

In its summary the judging panel commended Rexam for its ability to show an exemplary degree of adaptiveness and its ability to "work tirelessly and creatively to demonstrate to customers and suppliers the value they add to the supply chain".

In recent years Rexam has introduced a number of supply chain best practice models to improve business performance. In this case, it started with a programme designed to build closer supplier partnerships by focusing on total cost (to both parties) rather than price.

Further developments such as e-portals are enhancing collaboration with customers and suppliers even further.

The Supply Chain Excellence Awards are organised by leading trade magazine Logistics Europe, in partnership with Capgemini, and recognise outstanding performance in supply chain operations across Europe.
