How Web 2.0 impacts supply chin management?
Filed in archive Point of view on November 5, 2008

I am sure many of you have heard about Web 2.0 concept and technologies; They are now at the top of the hype curve and a professor from Harvard has even created a new term called "Enterprise 2.0".
Being in the area of supply chain, I was asking myself what would be the benefit of social network, forums, collaboration platforms, blogs, etc. would be for SCM?
I can see some areas as good candidates: One of them is CPFR; the collaborative nature of Web 2.0 technologies allow companies to make better and more reliable forecasts. Another area is in the product design phase; people from different functions can share information related to production, inventories, concepts and so on and prepare a final design with low complexity impact for the supply chain. Also they can be used in the process of product testing in manufacturing (if company is using outsourced manufacturers) however I don't see any immediate use for areas such as logistics and warehousing.
Do you think these technologies can be applied there as well?

Ehsan, where there is collaboration, there is Web2.0 opportunity. There are many areas in logistics and supply chain management process where feedback or interactive functions are necessary -- and our research indicates that certain social media approaches can and will be applied successfully. Carrier management. Continuous Improvement and Six Sigma. Customer Service and client services. Social media originally designed for consumer needs are now turning their attention to B2B contexts--and a virtually untapped market potential.

Very-very-very interesting issue!
I'm an habitual user of web 2.0 tools as blog, twitter, wikis, RSS, del.icio.us... and I'm logistics & SCM teacher at Mondragon University (Spain). It's quite a long time since I'm wondering the same: "Web 2.0 tools utility in SCM and logistics". I'd like to deepen a bit more in this subject, but it´s quite difficult for me to explain all those things in english.
- Do you understand spanish?
