Hot topics in consumer goods supply chain management
Filed in archive Point of view on February 5, 2009

I think consumer goods sector was one of the few industries where some companies gained from economic crisis (companies in food sector e.g. GENERAL MILLS) and some companies ended up with lots of inventories (like the apparel producers and retailers).
In any case, the hot topics today for all consumer goods companies seem to be similar: Focus on cost reduction, try to do more with less and sustainability. That's what SC Digest Editorial Staff have also been writing about as well (read the post here). As the summary, the authors consider five key elements as hot in consumer and retail area; they also provide nice examples from companies like P&G or Heinz. The five mentioned points include:
1. Looking at the Supply Chain from the Shelf Back
2. Better Integrating Planning and Execution
3. Focus on Transportation Costs
4. Improving Execution of Promotions and New Product Introductions
5. Building the Green Supply Chain
