Book Review: Lean Six Sigma For Supply Chain Management
Filed in archive Book Review on October 14, 2007
One of the good books in the area of supply chain management which provide a link to Quality management field as well is Lean Six Sigma for supply chain management .
The book is written by James William Martin, a master black belt which currently runs Six Sigma Integration, Inc., a Lean Six Sigma consulting firm, located south of Boston. One of the questions that often comes to mind is that how can we integrate concepts like six sigma, with inventory optimization, MRP or Toyota Manufacturing system. Well, Martin provides a 10 step process to achieve the efficiency in the bottom line using an integrated package of the mentioned tools and concepts.
Some of the areas which have been covered in the book include:
- Using Lean Six Sigma Methods to Identify and Manage Supply Chain Projects
- Demand Management Impact on Lean Six Sigma Projects
- Lead-Time Impact on Lean Six Sigma Projects
- Lean Six Sigma Applications to Materials Requirements Planning (MRPII)
- Identifying Lean Six Sigma Projects Using Inventory Models
- Lean Supply Chains and Third-Party Logistics
At the end of the book, two useful appendixes can be found as well which have useful information about common supply chain metrics and some six sigma concepts. The book has been published in 2006 and can be bought online through amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.

BTW, the reference in the review to Material Requirements Planning (MRPII)is incorrect, it should be MRP...MRPII is Manufacturing Resource Planning.
